Economic Viability of Polyculture of Nile Tilapia and Australian Redclaw Crayfish in Yucatan State, Mexico AgEcon
Ponce-Marban, Donny; Hernandez, Juan; Gasca-Leyva, Eucario.
Tilapia culture in rural communities of the state of Yucatan, Mexico, has been increasing in recent decades. Polyculture of tilapia with other more commercially valuable species is an opportunity to substantially improve the economic yields of rural producers. The economic viability of implementing a Nile tilapia with Australian redclaw crayfish polyculture was analyzed using profitability indicators such as internal rate of return (IRR) and net present value of the investment (NPV). A bioeconomic model was developed to simulate three production densities (33/0, 33/20, tilapia and crayfish, respectively), accounting for investment recuperation in time horizons of 5, 10 and 15 years. The model includes a biological sub-model describing the growth of...

Experimental evaluation of co-culture of juvenile sea cucumbers, Holothuria scabra (Jaeger), with juvenile blue shrimp, Litopenaeus stylirostris (Stimpson) ArchiMer
Purcell, S; Patrois, Jacques; Fraisse, N.
The co-culture of juvenile sea cucumber Holothuria scabra (Jaeger), or 'sandfish', with juvenile blue shrimp Litopenaeus stylirostris (Stimpson) was tested by growing groups in co-culture and monoculture for 3 weeks in tanks with enriched sand substratum. Feed was supplied on trays, accessible only to shrimp. Survival of shrimp and sandfish was high in all treatments (73-100%). Growth of shrimp did not differ between monoculture and co-culture, but sandfish grew significantly slower in co-culture (P=0.03), although their sand burying and surface foraging were apparently unaffected by shrimp (P=0.76). However, shrimp increased the levels of total ammonia-N in tanks, which related inversely with sandfish growth (P=0.04). Conversely, sandfish did not appear...

Luong, Trung Cong; Hochard, Sebastien; Royer, Florence; Lemonnier, Hugues; Letourneur, Yves.
The study was conducted to (1) estimate the effects of polyculture of blue shrimp Litopenaeus stylirostris with goldlined rabbitfish Siganus lineatus on production, environmental quality and water and sediment metabolism and (2) to determine if blue shrimp and goldlined rabbitfish polyculture is possible. The experiment was carried out for 12 weeks in a mesocosm system that consisted of 12 circular outdoor mesocosm fiberglass tanks (1.7 m2, 1275 L water volume). Shrimp (2.9 g) were randomly stocked at density of 15 shrimp.m− 2 without rabbitfish (control), with rabbitfish (25.5 g) at low density (1.2 fish.m− 2) (LDRB) and high density (2.4 fish.m− 2) (HDRB). Results indicated that goldlined rabbitfish S. lineatus did not affect shrimp growth performance....

Les systèmes intégrés en aquaculture marine : une solution durable pour un meilleur respect de l’environnement littoral ArchiMer
Hussenot, Jerome.
The former extensive polyculture systems of marine fish farming, are today replaced mainly by intensive monoculture systems (salmon, shrimp). These systems, multiplied in the same coastal zone, can present a significant environmental impact. To treat and value fish farming effluents, new integrated systems were constructed and tested to different scales. Some examples of land- and seabased systems around the world are presented, in particular the European project of innovation "Genesis" in which several French public and private, national and regional organisations are participants (IFREMER, Regional Centre of Experiment and Aquacultural Applications in Poitou- Charentes, IDEE). Recommendations are supplied to promote the development of the integrated fish...

Microbial control of the culture of Artemia juveniles through preemptive colonization by selected bacterial strains OMA
Verschuere, L.; Rombaut, G.; Huys, G.; Dhont, J.; Sorgeloos, P.; Verstraete, W..
The use of juvenile Artemia as feed in aquaculture and in the pet shop industry has been getting more attention during the last decade. In this study, the use of selected bacterial strains to improve the nutritional value of dry food for Artemia juveniles and to obtain control of the associated microbial community was examined. Nine bacterial strains were selected based on their positive effects on survival and/or growth of Artemia juveniles under monoxenic culture conditions, while other strains caused no significant effect, significantly lower rates of survival and/or growth, or even total mortality of the Artemia . The nine selected strains were used to preemptively colonize the...

Yacon planting density in intercropping with corn under banana orchard Horticultura Brasileira
Teixeira,Ariany das Graças; Oliveira,Fábio Luiz de; Parajara,Magno do C; Zucoloto,Moises; Dalvi,Leandro P.
ABSTRACT Yacon is a crop which requires development of strategies for its cultivation. One of the possibilities is to introduce yacon in perennial crops using intercropping system. The aim of this study was to evaluate different planting densities of yacon grown in intercropping with corn under banana orchard, verifying its development and production. At 90 days after planting, morphological and physiological evaluations were done, at 210 days yacon was harvested, and its productivity calculated using the fresh tuberous root production. The Area Equivalence Index (IEA), and the Relative Contribution of Crops (CRC) to IEA were calculated. Yacon development and production were hampered by the corn intercropping (under the banana orchard), regardless of the...
